1. Scrie ingerului Bisericii din Efes: Acestea zice Cel ce tine cele sapte stele in dreapta Sa, Cel care umbla in mijlocul celor sapte sfesnice de aur:

Domnul Se recomandă îngerului – conducerii – Bisericii din Efes – cea vrednică de dorit – ca fiind Acela care susține cu dreapta Lui conducerea Bisericii și care Se găsește (umblă, lucrează) în mijlocul Bisericii peste care acesta este pus ca administrator.
2. Stiu faptele tale si osteneala ta si rabdarea ta si cum ca nu poti suferi pe cei rai si ai cercat pe cei ce se zic pe sine apostoli si nu sunt si i-ai aflat mincinosi;
3. Si starui in rabdare si ai suferit pentru numele Meu si nu ai obosit.

Domnul are pentru Biserica din Efes multe cuvinte de apreciere, care duc cu gândul pe cel ce a studiat Cuvântul Domnului până aici la admirabila descriere a dragostei din 1Corinteni 13. El apreciază o Biserică curată, care își păstrează curăția punând la probă și disprețuind pe cei răi și mincinoși. O Biserică cu o dragoste desăvârșită.
4. Dar am impotriva ta faptul ca ai parasit dragostea ta cea dintai.

Se pare că Biserica Efes are două faze – așa reiese din expresia dragostea cea dintâi – prima fază fiind aceea a desăvârșirii slujirii ei din versetele 2-3, iar a doua caracterizându-se prin piederea dragostei dintâi.
5. Drept aceea, adu-ti aminte de unde ai cazut si te pocaieste si fa faptele de mai inainte; iar de nu, vin la tine curand si voi misca sfesnicul tau din locul lui, daca nu te vei pocai.

Din nou avem confirmarea existenței a două etape în viața Bisericii din Efes. Mai mult încă, etapa a doua este atât de rea încât Domnul nu numai că chiamă la pocăință, ci avertizează conducerea Bisericii că, în cazul nepocăinței, El Își scoate Biserica de sub influența ei.
6. Ai insa partea buna ca urasti faptele nicolaitilor, pe care le urasc si Eu.

Nicolaitilor. Una din sectele eretice care au chinuit bisericile din Efes si Pergam, si probabil si în alte parti. Irineu îi identifica pe nicolaiti ca fiind o secta gnostica: “Ioan, ucenicul Domnului, predica aceasta credinta [Dumnezeirea lui Hristos], si cauta, prin proclamarea Evangheliei, sa dea la o parte acea eroare pe care a semanat-o între oameni Cherintus, si mai înainte un timp îndelungat cei numiti nicolaiti, încercând sa îi convinga ca este un singur Dumnezeu care a facut toate lucrurile prin Cuvântul Sau” (op. cit. iii. 11. 1; ANF, vol. 1, p. 426). Exista dovezi istorice despre o secta gnostica numita Nicolaiti, cam la un secol mai târziu. Unii parinti bisericesti care raporteaza ceva despre aceasta secta (Irenaeus op. cit. i. 26. 3; Hippolytus Refutation of All Heresies vii. 24) îl identifica pe fondatorul ei cu Nicolae din Antiohia, unui din cei sapte diaconi (vezi Faptele Ap. 6:5). Daca acesta traditie cu privire la diaconul Nicolae este corecta, nu stim, dar aceasta secta ar putea fi aceeasi cu cea mentionata de Ioan. Cel putin în secolul al II-lea, aderentii acestei secte par a fi învatat ca faptele trupului nu afecteaza puritatea sufletului, si drept urmare nu au nimic de-a face cu mântuirea.
Nicolaitanes
The church at Ephesus (Re 2:6) is commended for hating the “deeds” of the Nicolaitanes, and the church of Pergamos is blamed for having them who hold their “doctrines” (Re 2:15). They were seemingly a class of professing Christians, who sought to introduce into the church a false freedom or licentiousness, thus abusing Paul’s doctrine of grace (comp. 2Pe 2:15-16,19), and were probably identical with those who held the doctrine of Baalam (q.v.), Re 2:14. <
7. Cine are urechi sa auda ceea ce Duhul zice Bisericilor: Celui ce va birui ii voi da sa manance din pomul vietii, care este in raiul lui Dumnezeu.

Promisiunea din partea Duhului Sfânt pentru Biserica biruitoare este viața veșnică. Împlinirea acestei făgăduințe implică implinirea altora, anume rezolvarea problemei păcatului și transformarea caracterului după chipul și asemănarea lui Dumnezeu.
8. Iar ingerului Bisericii din Smirna, scrie-i: Acestea zice Cel dintai si Cel de pe urma, Cel care a murit si a inviat:

Domnul Se recomandă Bisericii din Smirna potrivit nevoilor ei: Smirna înseamnă miros plăcut, sau parfumul dulce al jertfei și reprezintă Biserica prigonită de împărații romani păgâni. Pentru Smirna e încurajator să știe că Domnul e Cel dintâi și Cel de pe urmă, adică stăpânirea romană prigonitoare este trecătoare, urmând ca, după ce aceasta își face lucrarea, Domnul să pună capăt terorii și să Se arate în slava Sa. Recomandarea cuprinde și făgăduința vieții veșnice pentru cei care sunt uciși în această perioadă din pricina credinței lor în Domnul.
9. Stiu necazul tau si saracia ta, dar esti bogat, si hula din partea celor ce zic despre ei insisi ca sunt iudei si nu sunt, ci sinagoga a satanei.

10. Nu te teme de cele ce ai sa patimesti. Ca iata diavolul va sa arunce dintre voi in temnita, ca sa fiti ispititi, si veti avea necaz zece zile. Fii credincios pana la moarte si iti voi da cununa vietii.

11. Cine are urechi sa auda ceea ce Duhul zice Bisericilor: Cel ce biruieste nu va fi vatamat de moartea cea de-a doua.

12. Iar ingerului Bisericii din Pergam scrie-i: Acestea zice Cel ce are sabia ascutita de amandoua partile:

13. Stiu unde salasluiesti: unde este scaunul satanei; si tii numele Meu si n-ai tagaduit credinta Mea, in zilele lui Antipa, martorul Meu cel credincios, care a fost ucis la voi, unde locuieste satana.

14. Dar am impotriva ta cateva lucruri, ca ai acolo pe unii care tin invatatura lui Balaam, cel ce invata pe Balac sa puna piatra de poticneala inaintea fiilor lui Israel, ca sa manance care jertfita idolilor si sa se dea desfranarii.

15. Astfel ai si tu pe unii care, de asemenea, tin invatatura nicolaitilor.

16. Pocaieste-te deci, iar de nu, vin la tine curand si voi face cu ei razboi, cu sabia gurii Mele.

17. Cine are urechi sa auda ceea ce Duhul zice Bisericilor: Biruitorului ii voi da din mana cea ascunsa si-i voi da lui o pietricica alba si pe pietricica scris un nume nou, pe care nimeni nu-l stie, decat primitorul.

18. Iar ingerului Bisericii din Tiatira scrie-i: Acestea zice Fiul lui Dumnezeu, ai Carui ochi sunt ca para focului si picioarele asemenea aramei stralucitoare:

19. Stiu faptele tale si dragostea si credinta si slujirea si rabdarea ta si stiu ca faptele tale cele de pe urma sunt mai multe decat cele dintai.

20. Dar am impotriva ta faptul ca lasi pe femeia Izabela, care se zice pe sine proorocita, de invata si amageste pe robii Mei, ca sa faca desfranari si sa manance cele jertfite idolilor.

21. Si i-am dat timp sa se pocaiasca si nu voieste sa se pocaiasca de desfranarea ei.

22. Iata, o arunc pe ea bolnava la pat si pe cei ce se desfraneaza cu ea, in mare stramtorare, daca nu se vor pocai de faptele lor.

23. Si pe fiii ei cu moarte ii voi ucide si vor cunoaste toate Bisericile ca Eu sunt Cel care cercetez ranunchii si inimile si voi da voua, fiecaruia, dupa faptele voastre.

24. Iar voua si celorlalti din Tiatira cati nu au invatatura aceasta, ca unii care n-au cunoscut adancurile satanei, dupa cum spun ei, va zic: nu pun peste voi alta greutate.

25. Insa, ceea ce aveti, tineti pana voi veni.

27. Si le va pastori pe ele cu toiag de fier si ca pe vasele olarului le va sfarama, precum si eu am luat putere de la Tatal Meu.
